How to conduct a pookalam competition

During onam we can witness lots of competition going on in Kerala. One of such competition is pookalam making competition.Actually there are certain rules for conducting a pookalam competition. In this blog I will explain my experience in conducting a pookalam competition in Kerala during onam.

If you are conducting a competition for the first time then you can also raise money by putting an entry fee for the contestants to participate in the competition. The entry fee should be less and in that way you will get more contestants. You can also use a color code for various teams to increase team spirit among contestants. The more the contestants the more tough the competition will be.

Rules

When conducting a competition rules are introduced. These rules are based on the type of competition.when I first conducted a competition related to it I conducted it with certain rules I will explain it in this blog.

1.Shape of pookalam

Pookalam can be round or anything.I prefer to be circular in nature. The patterns can be of any shape and size.In order to select the winner the shape of pookalam if selected to be round will be better for evaluation of winner. The winners are announced based on the patterns shape and structure.Do not worry much about the patterns inside.Make sure the border line should be perfect in any manner.

2 Contestants

It is better to wear traditional clothes like mundu for men and saree for woman to make a traditional vibe. You also introduce age limits or category of contestants.Contestants number should be specific to avoid rush in the hall during competition.

3.Type of flower

If you want you can introduce rules on flowers to be used for the design if possible avoid certain flowers which cannot be used for the design. If you want the competition to be tough then you can introduce certain colors of flowers only used in competition.

4.Not to use vegetables for making pookalam

It is adviced to avoid vegetables for pookalam making. In pookalam making using vegetables is considered as negative marking during evaluation sometimes. Some contestants use vegetables instead of flowers to prevent using expensive flowers thus helping to prevent from the over expense of flowers. In traditional pookalam making avoid this mistake.

5.Diameter or size of pookalam

In a hall if there are more contestants you can introduce a rule to make border size dimension of pookalam.Make sure the pookalam should be within the dimension thus making it perfect. In large hall if the area is not properly distributed between various available space then it might lead to oversize or small size of pookalam.

6.Time for putting pookalam

It is adviced to put a particular time for the competition. The time should be based on the availability of the hall for the competition. If are giving ore time then awesome designs can be made.If time limit is set the competition will be tough and winners are selected within time frame.Any pattern can be made in this form helping to make awesome pookalam.

7.Number of participants in a group

The number of participants in a group sholud be specifically mentioned in the rules to avoid any last minute rush or dispute during competition.Preferable a team of 5 members are required for pookalam making .If it is a large pookalam then about 15 participants are required.

I hereby mentioned my experience in pookalam making.Make sure to announce the competition in social media to avoid last minute rush. You can announce it a week before the competition.Judges can evaluate the design by following certain criteria like pattern, color combination, amount of  flowers used, how it looks, etc.
